Brazil is the third-largest wine producer in South America behind Argentina and Chile, with over 1,000 wineries producing wines of all levels and qualities. In March 2013, a fifth-generation wine producer, Lidio Carraro, held off competition from larger rivals to become the official wine supplier for the FIFA 2014 World Cup. The boutique Lidio Carraro winery is located in the Serra Gaúcha region of south-east Brazil, where 85 per cent of the country's wine is produced. Currently, the Brazilian wine regions total 206,828 acres, divided into six regions: Serra Gaúcha, Campanha, Serra do Sudeste and Campos de Cima da Serra, no Rio Grande do Sul, Planalto Catarinense, in Santa Catarina, and Vale do São Francisco, in the north-east of Brazil.

Many Faces in one Heart
The wine is called "Faces" in an attempt to capture the diverse cultures among the population of Latin America's largest country - many faces in one heart, putting a little taste of Brazil in a bottle. Lidio Carraro Faces is made in Red, White and Rosé. The wines are served at FIFA-organised events during the World Cup and also sold in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

11 Players = 11 Grapes in Faces Red
The Lidio Carraro Faces Red is made from a blend of 11 grape varieties to mirror a team of players, each with their specific role. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, representing 50 per cent, are the varieties that are most immediately noticeable on the nose - these are the strikers in the team.
Teroldego, Touriga Nacional, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir comprise the midfield and play an important role in providing the mid-palate flavours of plum, violets, chocolate and raspberry. In defence are Tannat, Nebbiolo, Alicante and Ancellota, which give structure to the blend. Finally in goal is Malbec, to ensure a good finish on the palate.
While the red wine represents the diversity of Brazilian people and a nod to the beautiful game, the Lidio Carraro Faces White represents the joyfulness of the Brazilians and is made from a blend of Moscato, Italian Riesling and Chardonnay. Finally, the Lidio Carraro Faces Rosé is made from Pinot Noir, Merlot and Touriga Nacional, reflecting the vitality and youthfulness of Brazilians.
The producers want the wines to be enjoyed by both local and foreign drinkers, whether beginners or connoisseurs. In order to diffuse the joy of being selected as FIFA's official wine, they partnered with a range of grape growers from other regions in order to get all the varietals they needed and also to create a wine that truly offered a bit of Brazil in a bottle.
Brazil produces fresh, fruity and balanced wines which are very pleasant, with
moderate alcohol content. I have made a few requests for some bottles to be brought back by returning football fans. Wish me luck.
